Last: EASLEY CommentsI am now in 2-77FA because we have reflagged from 2-17FA. Last: Jones CommentsYou guys are GREAT ! Just back from Vietnam - got Dirt from F.S.B. Illingsworth - soon will be at Fort Sill , Oklahoma - Dirt for Memorial of Illingsworth - Courage Lane ! Last: Scott CommentsI just watched a program about the Paladin on the History Channel. That is one awesome cannon. I thought my cannoneers and chart operators were second to none but this new M-109 is a cannoncockers dream come true. Forty years ago the action on LZ peanut was under way. Let us remember our fallen comrades fondly and with reverence. Softly call the Muster. It remains one of the proudest days of my life watching those from the 77th Arty waving and cheering as we broke into the clearing of the firebase. This conflict lasted from March 19th to March 21st, 1967. and with the arrival of the Mech forces ended the 3 day battle 4 hours later . When it was nice and safe the brass hats and intelligence REMF’s arrived to confiscate the war souvenirs. Don’t believe all that you hear from the History Channel and Military Channel. The NVA 9th Division commander says that Operation Junction City had no effect on his division , only the un-enlightened media can believe that a commander can loose most of a regiment and say that. Gen Vessey’s spin ignores those who saved his butt for his climb to the Chief of Staff for the Army. We cannot forget the 31 Americans that were killed in this battle Last: McIntosh CommentsI was the Battalion welder on Sheridan Kassern Augsburg, Germany. We were a 8 inch Battalion. Last: schwindt Commentsdoes anyone know how to get coordinates of an action in vietnam. the action happened nov 20th 1966, death recorded day nov 22nd, in the rung sat special zone. c 2/77th fired for us that day, a lot. It has brought back many memories that were stored in a place from long ago. Last: Ybarra CommentsI wish I could remember. I was hoping somebody would write in with our activities during that period. I remember coming into Base Camp from Burt. The rest is like a news reel, certain faces and instances will come into focus, then on to the next scene. What great fun, heh? Last: Scott CommentsRe, TET '68, I was Alpha Battery XO during TET '68. We were on LZ Uplift, colocated with 2nd Brigade and Battalion HQ's. I believe that Uplift was the only HQ firebase that was not hit hard that night. Why? The 1/9 did their "last light" recon and caught the little buggers in the open. They put in a "Blue" platoon and we shot the hell out of them all night long. We hed three tubes working, one shot illumination and the other platoon would shoot HE under the light. Not long after we moved North for the Khe Sahn operation, etc. Last: king Commentslooking for anyone ..e mail me Last: Nota CommentsLast: James (Jim) Commentshas 2 guns at SF camp A322 (Katum) until July 68, then battery went to Mekong delta (Canto). Great site Doc Bosma thank you for your hard work. Johnny Last: Tagge CommentsThe purpose of Memorial Day is to pause, reflect and remember those who have died in military service to our nation. If you attend a Memorial Day observance you will probably hear words like sacrifice, valor, honor and duty – something less and less of our nation’s people and its leaders experience in today’s all volunteer military. Those of us who have served or are presently serving know better. Today is a time – public or private – to offer our own thoughts and prayers and deep feelings of gratitude to those that came before us and to those leading the way forward today. Thank you all for your service to your country! Last: Kraemer CommentsLast: Osborne CommentsIf anyone was with B Btry 1/77 April 1, 1970 and was at FSB Illingsworth when it was attacked please contact me. Last: Randle El CommentsHello Doc: It's been a while since I visited the site. The updates and upgrades look good. Thanks for keeping the memories alive. Thanks to all my "brothers" and "sisters" for serving. We did a good thing. I was one of the boat people that went over on the Gordon with the 6/77. We stopped at Subic Bay in the Philippines after 22days on the water. Two days later we were landing at Vung Tau. Convoyed to Cu Chi from there. I was part of the Army's equal employment opportunity program and was shipped to Dau Tieng to the 2/77 in about August of 1967. Rotated back home April 27, 1968 as an E-5. I served my entire tour as a fire direction specialist. (Guess because I went to the school at Fort Sill in '67.) Miss you guys and hope that you are all well and that God has blessed your lives. Last: Hatheway CommentsI've got a ton of peacetime ("STRAC") stories. The BN CO forced me to compile and write the unit history back to the Regiment's origin as a gene-split from the old 18th Cavalry Regiment of the Mexican Punative Expedition (hence the beaver-tail cactus on the regimental shield; not really a problem as I am an engineer with a strong lifetime interest in military history); served with the 4th ID at Fort Lewis, Washington. Lots of imagery as well; we had M-52 SP guns (105mm), but our 155's were towed by WWII-era "High Speed" tractors powered by radial aircraft engines; jeeps were M-38AI's; our personal weapons were M-14's, M-1 carbines, M-3 "grease guns" and .45 M-1911AI pistols; our light MG's were M-1919AI air-cooled and M2 .50 cal. We had some serious command problems and the lowest re-enlishment rate in the Division (our recruiting NCO, an overstrength E-7 aid man, went AWOL out of his frustration, but turned himself in to the Surgeon General of The Army; his old commander, a day short of becoming a deserter). Two years later LTC Vesey was in command had the outfit truly shaped-up for the heoric, hand-to-hand fighting defense of Fire Base Gold. Last: Gibson CommentsLast: Harwood CommentsGreat site - I was a PFC with HHB, 2d Bn, 77th Arty, 25th Inf Div., on Feb 22/23 at Dau Teing. We called the mountain The Black Virgin - Nui Ba Den. When I got there in Nov '68 it was green, when I left it was a sand pile. I don't know if anyone remembers, but me and 8 guys were on "Orphan Anne," the 105 Howitzer on the runway that night. She was named by Sgt. Miracle. That night her barrel was level with the runway and we were blowing 8/9 sec. beehives, practically shooting ourselves. VC were running right past us with satchels - incredible. At one point we were so low on ammunition me and my buddy drove a deuce-and 1/2 back to the dump to get more; we were driving on the rims. I remember two F107 jets coming in side-by-side at tree level. Right over our heads they released napalm 2 or 3 each - 5 seconds later it lit up the night. Two of us were killed before morning. There were Cobras overhead and we took some shrapnel - nobody could see. I was spattered, but a large piece went right past me and hit the guy behind me in solar plexis. He was looking right at me when he died, but I can't remember what he saying. The next morning we're sitting there and this guy crawls out on his belly, falls into the bunker and says "their shooting at you." We finally isolated the sniper and on 3-count stood and riddled the tree with M16s. I don't know why, but I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes - we all were. After a beer hall brawl a few days later, I found myself an RTO with Charlie company supporting Diamond I, II, III- night ambush. There was a place called the "hardspot" on the Saigon River believe it was called FB Harris I left from there 365 days after in a loach you could see tracers the guy went straight up never thought we would make it. I wonder if anybody remembers me? Looking for Sgt. Miracle hed be in his mid to late 60s now, Bob Wooson, and Hector Elatia. Jim Kesso was wounded within a month after Dau Tieng he made it home, but was t-boned at an intersection on his motorcycle in South Dakota. I talk to his nephew who is named after him. I was also at Cu Chi cant remember all the places wish I could remember more names. My sister worked for GTE corp in WIS program throughout the 1980s with a pilot named John Keegan who flew a lot of guys off of firebases none of us made the connect at that time but, wondered if coincident was crazy enough to have had us pass in the night. When not doing that, I drove for Capt. Starke. Has anyone heard from Deponti? I remember you had to watch where the 5 gallon diesel fuel cans were or you had to go out in middle of night to get more fuel for the huts. Does anyone remember living on the road during the Cuban Missile Crisis? Also, Like SSG Worthy said, it brings chills to hear Waltzing Matilda when it was your time to cross the bridge. Last: Johnson CommentsI don't see much here for or from those of us who served in Germany during the 80's. You know we were part of the 77th also, we even had the same unit crest. Some of my best memories and feelings of camaraderie was with gunbunnies of Babenhausen. I hope everyone is doing well. I would love to hear from anyone who was there. Last: DiMaria CommentsLast: Harwood CommentsLooking for anyone who remembers 23 February 1969 Dau Tieng. Remember CPT Battle, Sgt. Miracle, and others. Last: Johnson CommentsHello, I found this from an article my son (PFC Bates, Philip R.) sent me from a reporter who went on the mission with them. He's in the 1/77th B Btry in Kuwait now. I support all our troops and pray for all of them! We have several family and extended family member's who send care packages for our troops. My son shares what I send with everyone and hope it helps them remember we support them with all they do! Take Care of Our Men! I did reconize several men in my unit on your list. now how do i get in contact with them/ thanks / nickname while in vietnam was slowmotion Last: burgess Commentskeep up the good work Last: Bosma CommentsWith both active battalions of the 77th Field Artillery deployed, we are seeing many hits on this website for pictures and news about the soldiers. Because of security issues, and for the protection of those soldiers, he have removed names, photos, and any mission particulars concerning the 1-77th and the 2-77th. The safety of our soldiers is far more important than our desire to follow their experiences. This DOES NOT mean we do not continue to STRONGLY support what they are doing. It should give each of you all the more reason to send more letters of encouragement and care packages to the troops. The addresses listed on our home page will remain so that the soldiers serving in the 77th Artillery can know we want their deployment experiences to be as painless and comfortable - AND APPRECIATED - as we can make them. Please continue to aggressively and sacrificially participate in Project Trooper Support! Last: carter CommentsLast: DiMarino (Minnick) CommentsThis is a very interesting website. I was actually looking for pictures of 2-77 FA 4ID, but none have been posted yet. This is my brother's second tour in Iraq and any pics or websites I find past the time till he comes back, and also keeps him a little closer to us. Keep up the good work! Last: Harless CommentsMy first son was deployed to Iraq from Ft. Hood in 2003. His wife worked hard with the FRG to give the families the support they needed as their loved ones ventured so far from home with their life in turmoil not knowing what to expect from day to day. Now my second son Alpha Co., 2-77, deployed on Dec.3,2005, and the RFG is not providing the support to the troops families that are left behind. My daughter-in-law has offered to help, but to no avail does she get answers, or know where to go to get information on building a great RFG for the families. These families need the RFG to be there in time of need, so why is it so slow on getting up and moving? Last: Bosma CommentsJust thought I'd sign in to start out the year. Please notice that we now have addresses posted for the 1-77th FA AND the 2-77th FA, each deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Please send off a care package with goodies, Audio CDs, Movie DVDs (keep them decent, please), blank greeting cards for soldiers to send home, and, most importantly, letters of encouragement and appreciation for their sacrifices. All the best in the new year from Doc & Joanie Bosma
