Steve Sutphin, MIke Lacy, Harod Roach, Tom Callopy, Fred Strowbridge, and others who served with C btry in 69 and 70. I know we filled thousands of sand bags together and fired many 105 rounds for the Wolfhounds 1/27th. Inf. My nickname was Whitey because my hair was bleached white in the sun. I am proud to have served my country, when I look back we were all in our early twenties, we did a heck of a job as a unit. I am proud of C Btry 2/77.

I've got a ton of peacetime ("STRAC") stories. The BN CO forced me to compile and write the unit history back to the Regiment's origin as a gene-split from the old 18th Cavalry Regiment of the Mexican Punative Expedition (hence the beaver-tail cactus on the regimental shield; not really a problem as I am an engineer with a strong lifetime interest in military history); served with the 4th ID at Fort Lewis, Washington. Lots of imagery as well; we had M-52 SP guns (105mm), but our 155's were towed by WWII-era "High Speed" tractors powered by radial aircraft engines; jeeps were M-38AI's; our personal weapons were M-14's, M-1 carbines, M-3 "grease guns" and .45 M-1911AI pistols; our light MG's were M-1919AI air-cooled and M2 .50 cal. We had some serious command problems and the lowest re-enlishment rate in the Division (our recruiting NCO, an overstrength E-7 aid man, went AWOL out of his frustration, but turned himself in to the Surgeon General of The Army; his old commander, a day short of becoming a deserter). Two years later LTC Vesey was in command had the outfit truly shaped-up for the heoric, hand-to-hand fighting defense of Fire Base Gold.

With both the 1-77th and the 2-77th returning from dury in support of OIF, this is a GREAT opportunity to hear their experiences and thank them for their sacrifices while carrying on the proud heritage of the En Garde FALCONS! Register today ... and we'll see you at Fort Sill the end of January!

My father was Major William Allred B Com 77 Field Artillery Bn. I only heard of the action on Oct 13 1950 when Major Erickson visited us in Alabama in 1975. They talked about this only once.
Major Erickson passed away a few years ago and Dad passed away June 14, 2003 ( flag day ).
May God Bless all the brave men that lost their lives in that fierce battle on Oct 13, 1950.

Respectfully,
Tom Allred

Does anyone reall the loss of a recon team and/or team members in I Corps around the end of September, 1968? Did you ever go on recon with Sgt. Carl Ussery? He was attached to HHC 1/5 Cav and A Co., 1/5 - parent unit B (sometimes listed as HHS) 1/77 Artillery.
Our family has recently been informed that Carl was actually "lost on recon"/not in a helicopter crash (which we have had reason to suspect for some time). Any information would be appreciated.
At the minimum, we have a confirmed remains misidentification.          Thank you.

Great site - I was a PFC with HHB, 2d Bn, 77th Arty, 25th Inf Div., on Feb 22/23 at Dau Teing. We called the mountain The Black Virgin - Nui Ba Den. When I got there in Nov '68 it was green, when I left it was a sand pile. I don't know if anyone remembers, but me and 8 guys were on "Orphan Anne," the 105 Howitzer on the runway that night. She was named by Sgt. “Miracle.” That night her barrel was level with the runway and we were blowing 8/9 sec. beehives, practically shooting ourselves. VC were running right past us with satchels - incredible. At one point we were so low on ammunition me and my buddy drove a deuce-and 1/2 back to the dump to get more; we were driving on the rims. I remember two F107 jets coming in side-by-side at tree level. Right over our heads they released napalm – 2 or 3 each - 5 seconds later it lit up the night. Two of us were killed before morning. There were Cobras overhead and we took some shrapnel - nobody could see. I was spattered, but a large piece went right past me and hit the guy behind me in solar plexis. He was looking right at me when he died, but I can't remember what he saying. The next morning we're sitting there and this guy crawls out on his belly, falls into the bunker and says "their shooting at you." We finally isolated the sniper and on 3-count stood and riddled the tree with M16s. I don't know why, but I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes - we all were. After a beer hall brawl a few days later, I found myself an RTO with Charlie company supporting Diamond I, II, III- night ambush. There was a place called the "hardspot" on the Saigon River – believe it was called FB Harris – I left from there 365 days after in a loach – you could see tracers – the guy went straight up – never thought we would make it. I wonder if anybody remembers me? Looking for Sgt. Miracle – he’d be in his mid to late 60s now, Bob Wooson, and Hector Elatia. Jim Kesso was wounded within a month after Dau Tieng – he made it home, but was t-boned at an intersection on his motorcycle in South Dakota. I talk to his nephew who is named after him. I was also at Cu Chi – can’t remember all the places – wish I could remember more names. My sister worked for GTE corp in WIS program throughout the 1980s with a pilot named John Keegan who flew a lot of guys off of firebases – none of us made the connect at that time but, wondered if coincident was crazy enough to have had us pass in the night.

I was in the FDC section. When not doing that, I drove for Capt. Starke. Has anyone heard from Deponti?  I remember you had to watch where the 5 gallon diesel fuel cans were or you had to go out in middle of night to get more fuel for the huts. Does anyone remember living on the road during the Cuban Missile Crisis? Also, Like SSG Worthy said, it brings chills to hear Waltzing Matilda when it was your time to cross the bridge.

I don't see much here for or from those of us who served in Germany during the 80's. You know we were part of the 77th also, we even had the same unit crest. Some of my best memories and feelings of camaraderie was with gunbunnies of Babenhausen. I hope everyone is doing well. I would love to hear from anyone who was there.

One of the first dozen or so members of the unit when reactivated as an AFA unit at Fort Campbell. Bit of a shock after just returning from RVN, but a great tour nonetheless. Never forget taking delivery of 12 brand new G Model Cobra's. Met my wife (31 years now) while there and started my family and career (CW4 Retired). With both active battalions of the 77th Field Artillery deployed, we are seeing many hits on this website for pictures and news about the soldiers. Because of security issues, and for the protection of those soldiers, he have removed names, photos, and any mission particulars concerning the 1-77th and the 2-77th. The safety of our soldiers is far more important than our desire to follow their experiences.

This DOES NOT mean we do not continue to STRONGLY support what they are doing. It should give each of you all the more reason to send more letters of encouragement and care packages to the troops.

The addresses listed on our home page will remain so that the soldiers serving in the 77th Artillery can know we want their deployment experiences to be as painless and comfortable - AND APPRECIATED - as we can make them.

Please continue to aggressively and sacrificially participate in Project Trooper Support!

My first son was deployed to Iraq from Ft. Hood in 2003. His wife worked hard with the FRG to give the families the support they needed as their loved ones ventured so far from home with their life in turmoil not knowing what to expect from day to day. Now my second son Alpha Co., 2-77, deployed on Dec.3,2005, and the RFG is not providing the support to the troops families that are left behind. My daughter-in-law has offered to help, but to no avail does she get answers, or know where to go to get information on building a great RFG for the families. These families need the RFG to be there in time of need, so why is it so slow on getting up and moving?

Just thought I'd sign in to start out the year. Please notice that we now have addresses posted for the 1-77th FA AND the 2-77th FA, each deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Please send off a care package with goodies, Audio CDs, Movie DVDs (keep them decent, please), blank greeting cards for soldiers to send home, and, most importantly, letters of encouragement and appreciation for their sacrifices. All the best in the new year from Doc & Joanie Bosma
